Rhetoric Tip #16: Match Your Mood to Your Message
The Audible.com version of Voices of Reason: Lessons for Liberty’s Leaders is now available!
Narrating my own book was a test of vocal alignment. Could I live the rhetoric that I teach? Could my voice carry the conviction, clarity, and character of the words on the page?
Why Vocal Energy Shapes Trust and Impact
“I’m excited to be here,” said the speaker, eyes flat and voice monotone. The audience didn’t believe him. Why should they?
Words carry intention, but it’s your vocal energy that delivers conviction. If your tone, pacing, and mood contradict your message, your audience will trust your tone over your text. And that can kill credibility before you’ve begun.
Coaching Lessons: Mood-Message Mismatches
In my coaching sessions, I often hear clients start strong in words, but not in spirit. Some common mismatches I correct include:
“I’m thrilled to share this news with you…” (delivered like a weather report)
“This part really gets me emotional…” (but said with robotic indifference)
“This is a serious matter…” (while smiling or joking)
In each case, the mood and message are out of sync, and the audience senses the tension, even if only subconsciously.
Recording Voices of Reason: Walking the Talk
When I stepped into the studio to record the Audible version of my book, I knew I had to practice what I preached. When quoting Patrick Henry, I needed to channel fire and urgency. When reflecting on Martin Luther King Jr.’s high plane of dignity, I needed restraint and reverence. I did multiple takes. I stopped recording when my tone didn’t match the moment. I asked myself: Do I feel the message I’m delivering? Am I letting my voice align with the emotional truth behind these words?
Your Turn: Does Your Voice Match Your Intent?
Before your next speech, meeting, or interview, ask:
Does my tone match my intention?
Is my energy appropriate for this moment?
Am I saying one thing… but sounding like another?
Tip: Record a 30-second intro of yourself, play it back, and listen to it. If you say, “I’m excited to be here,” does your voice agree?
If not, don’t worry. It is a learned skill. And if you’d like help aligning your voice with your message, let’s talk. We’ll make sure your words land with authenticity and impact.
